“Watch [check] and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
– Matthew 26:41 ESV
On the night that Jesus needed His friends the most, the night He needed them more than ever to be spiritually alert, they all fell asleep. Eventually, it was just Jesus left alone praying to the Father in the garden. Jesus understood the humanity of His disciples because He understood the heart of men. The Word of God describes the flesh as that part of us that is slow to seek the Lord; it’s the part that gets tired quickly in prayer or the part that gets easily entangled by sin. Because we all have the propensity to be weak, we must make extra efforts to watch and pray. Just as these two things were all Jesus needed that night from His disciples, that’s all He needs from us. He is asking us Christians to watch and pray in the world we live in today. Check yourself.
